My Take On...
Success (or lack thereof) of Ethernet-Powerlink
For years I have been monitoring the market in regards to new fieldbus technologies with the potential to replace CAN (Controller Area Network) based technologies (CAN, CANopen, DeviceNet). There are currently systems such as FlexRay, LIN and Time-triggered CAN, however, the main focus seems to be on Ethernet-based technologies.

| The CAN Calibration Protocol (CCP) |
| The CAN Calibration Protocol was designed by ASAP (Arbeitskreis zur Standardisierung von Applikationssystemen = Standardization of Application/Calibration Systems task force) in 1999. I have been forwarded the ASAP CCP Standard by a friendly reader of my column and the document does not include any copyright message. Thus I feel free to publish it here on my web site. |
| The Myth of CAN Bus Length Extension per Repeater |
|
One article in the September 2006 issue of the CAN Newsletter, "Single chip repeaters boost CAN applications", caught my attention due to a blatantly misleading statement regarding CAN repeaters and their ability to overcome the restricted CAN bus length. As a matter of fact, repeaters do not and can not extend the length of a CAN network - unless they have managed to overcome the limits of the speed of light, in which case they should offer their invention to NASA. |
| J1939 and the Society of Automotive Engineers |
|
According to
Wikipedia, the biggest multilingual free-content encyclopedia on
the Internet, "SAE J1939 is the vehicle bus standard used for
communication and diagnostics among vehicle components,
originally by the car and heavy duty truck industry in the
United States." Beyond that statement there is only few
information to find on J1939 and the same is true for the entire
World Wide Web. The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), like
many standardization organizations, is keeping a close lock on
their written works and profound information on their web site
is sparse. Downloading the J1939 PDF documents comes with a
hefty price tag, even for SAE members who receive a discount not
worth mentioning. |
